Agents are actually not so new as people may imagine, however

MSAgent has been around for a good few years now. Basically
the technology is a software component that is an extension
of MS Windows since Windows 2000, and all Windows systems
already have Merlin installed. Speech recognition is now available
with the MSAgent, creating a visible character that becomes
interactive with the end user. Windows 2000, ME, and XP all
have MSAgent technology in conjunction with the Office Assistant.
For systems before Windows 2000, namely Windows 95 and 98,
the software components can still be downloaded via Microsoft.
One needs only to search for MSAgent on the Internet. Although
MSAgent has many animated characters, Merlin is the default
character.
A MSAgent may hold the attention of someone as they browse
your website, however they are not search engine friendly,
many people find them annoying, and they are not really recommended
in website design for these reasons. As previously stated
website design is all about easy navigation, appearance, but
above all - page ranking.
